Yelling at Yourself in the Mirror

Okay, so I have a confession to make. Well, it’s not really a big deal, but sometimes I like to yell at myself in the mirror. Not like in an angry way, but in a you need to stop doing the same crap over and over and move on way. Sometimes I feel like I have a disconnect with myself, and it takes me a while to consciously realize that while certain things like procrastination may seem wonderful at the time, they’re actually quite the harmful little killers.

This is why yelling (nicely, and not too loud if you have neighbours, you don’t want them to think you’re crazy, although I think we’re all a teensy bit crazy on the inside) at yourself in a mirror can prompt you to realize the thing you’ve been trying to avoid realizing. This normally happens after I’ve been procrastinating or unhappy for a while and trying to, I guess I’m trying to avoid leaving me comfort zone. I think that’s what this post is actually about, leaving the infamous comfort zone, and yelling at yourself in a mirror can prompt that to happen.

Writing can also be a way to realize what you’ve been avoiding, but I think sometimes it’s best to just yell at yourself in the mirror. This allows you to not hold back, whereas sometimes in writing you can get too caught up in the writing. Or you might not be great at writing, or it takes you awhile to put your thoughts down. But with yelling at, or just talking emphatically to yourself in a mirror, you can just let the words come out. You could even video tape yourself for later if you wanted, so when you slip back into old patterns you have a reminder.

If you’re going to do this, and I highly suggest you try it, even if you’re happy, then here are some pointers on how to do it. First, when I say yelling at myself, I mean more being frustrated with myself. The goal is not to make yourself feel bad, the goal is to have a breakthrough. This can turn into a negative experience really fast if you just yell at yourself about what you hate about yourself. Rather the goal from this should be to make you realize you’re unhappy with your current state and want to change. That being said, the other side to this exercise is to make you realize you can change and that you have the ability to change (I thought about writing you have the power to change but could not write something that cheesy. But you get my meaning). Think of a plan of action and tell your mirror self that you’re going to do it, and you’re going to be successful. You’d be surprized the wonders positive thinking can do for a person.

Happy yelling at yourself in the mirror! Have you ever yelled at yourself in a mirror?
