Book Review: On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah

Image
So I’ll be honest about this book, it’s kind of sad. Not sad in a bad way, but if you’re looking for an uplifting romance, you might want to pick something a little lighter. Like this . Or this . That being said, it is a good book, and I did enjoy it, and there are parts that can even be considered happy. Just keep an eye out for when the sad bits strike. When I first started reading On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah, I thought it was going to be a cliché. I don’t know why I have a tendency to sometimes judge a book so harshly after reading the first chapter or two. But I thought that this was going to go something like: husband demands divorce. Woman is devastated then finds inner strength without man. Then some crap about independence. And while this book does flirt with that, it’s much more than a cliché. It’s a fully developed novel. It shows us heartbreak and healing. And even though it’s not the typical novel I read, I enjoyed having read it, and learning about the characters...

23 Things I've Learned in 23 Years

Image
Today is my birthday, so I decided to be completely original and tell you 23 things I learned in 23 years. Because no one has ever done that. Ever. Since the beginning of time, which started, like, ten years ago? When the internet was born? I’m rambling. Why don’t you just start reading the list? No, really, you should read it now. Why are you still reading this? Why am I still writing it? Anyway, here you go: Humour is necessary if you want to survive life. Education (like high school, college, university) is a good thing to have. It can be a helpful thing. You can learn many interesting and useful things. But it doesn’t necessarily teach you how to function in the world outside of academia. Books are amazing. Writing is my passion, and passions should be followed, as should dreams. There will be days in life that are very dark. But they do not have to be forever. It’s important to take care of yourself. Whether that’s physically, or emotionally. Failure is not absolute...

Twitter Rant

Image
Just a warning, this post is very ranty. Okay, it is a rant. But perhaps you have some similar feelings about twitter and marketing in general. Also, sorry about the long block of text, but it is a rant… Twitter gives me headaches. Actually all the marketing in general does. Do this. Don’t do that. For fuck’s sake don’t tweet about your dog if it’s not related to your brand. But wait! Don’t only tweet promotion stuff. Because people want real connections. And by real , only connect with people who might buy the stuff your trying to sell. And only if it relates to your personal brand. Never talk about anything that isn’t related to your brand and your audience, because, you know, if you don’t the marketing gods will send thunderbolts to your house to punish you for your twitter sins. And god help you if you don’t know who your audience is. Because it’s so easy to tell if someone on twitter will like your book or whatever you’re selling. Because if people like something, they defin...

Book Review: Blood Infernal by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell

Image
Blood Infernal by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell is the third and final book in The Order of the Sanguines series, and it is amazing. I absolutely loved it. The ending was wonderful. The journey was wonderful. The characters were wonderful. I wish I could say more about what I liked, but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. But it definitely lived up to the first two books of the series: The Blood Gospel, and Innocent Blood. I decided not to do a review on them, as I read them before I started writing reviews, and I don’t think I would do them justice to write one now. However, if you’d like to read a review before getting them I found a couple I like here  and here . Either way, I enjoyed both books nearly as much as this one. The books I had read also had two short stories at the back that were quite good as well. But back to Blood Infernal. I’m going to start talking about what has already happened in the series now, so if you haven’t read the first two books and don’t want ...

Why I Quit the 30 Day Blog Challenge

Image
So I really thought that I would last longer than three days in the blog challenge, and that I would put a post up about stopping the challenge sooner, but it is what it is. There are a few reasons that I decided to stop blogging everyday though. This also applies if you’re thinking of blogging regularly every day, and not just doing a 30 day blog challenge. The main reason I stopped the blog challenge was because I was starting to not care about the posts that went up. The first few posts I already had ready, but after the third day I was thinking more about what I can shove on my blog to fill a space for the day, rather than trying to create something that actually had meaning. What happened was on one of the days I wrote a really long blog post about something personal to me that I might not post, but it helped me sort through things to write it anyway. The only thing is that it took a lot longer than I expected, and I didn’t finish it until late in the day. By that time if I w...

Book Review: Evelina 2 We All Die Alone by Tim Pearsall

Image
For day 3 of my blog challenge , a book review.  I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Evelina 2 is much like Evelina 1. If you have not read my review of Evelina 1, you can check it out here . It’s not the same in the sense that it’s repetitive, but in the sense that it’s written in the same style. There are the same flashes into the characters’ lives and the various different storylines. Basically we see bits of what is happening at a time, as the story is always jumping to other characters. But rather than being disjointed it works quite well, and the flow in the story is good. Also, as the flashes are short, it allows for each story to be continued while keeping the other stories in mind. What I mean is jumping around allows each story to be present and told simultaneously, rather than having long stretches between the storylines. In Evelina 1 we were left with Cairo and Eve going abroad together. I find Eve to be a complicated character...

Awakening (Day 2 of Blog Challenge)

Image
She awakens to her destiny. Her eyelids rip open, seeing for the first time in ages. She will pour every last ounce of energy, every breath from her lungs, into that which she is destined to do. Her eyes blaze a never ending fire. She is fire herself. The world will be her playground. Her enemies will fall in gruesome horror. Every last bit of her will be given. Only in death will she succumb. Photo Credit: Jenny Downing   pyrolatry via photopin (license)
